One of the biggest criticism of the first game was how bad the voice acting was. And none of that would be possible without 8-4's stunning localization. You'll come to love these characters in ways that few other JRPGs have ever accomplished. Only having three characters creates a much more intimate relationship between our cast, with Milly and Guillo's mutual animosity providing both comic relief and sincere growth. One of the reasons the story is powerful is because it shrinks its cast to three people - Sagi, his trusty Godcraft named Guillo, and Milly, a mysterious woman from Alfred. It's a welcome addition - the story was written by Koh Kojima, who would later go on to direct and produce Xenoblade Chronicles 2 after working as a quest designer on the first Baten Kaitos. This war is referenced in the original, but it plays out in the prequel much more different than expected. But while the original focused on the myths of the lost ocean and the mysterious End Magnus of the ancient demon Malpercio, Origins re-contextualizes the first game by showing you what happened 1000 years ago during the War of the Gods. The world of the game is the same as the world from Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean. Origins rectifies this, making the player more central to our characters' journey and more important to Sagi and his friends.
While this was an interesting aspect to the original Baten Kaitos, ultimately there was unrealized storytelling potenital. Spiriters are those who can communicate with a "spirit" from another world - ie. You play as Sagi, a spiriter from the island nation of Hassaleh working for the Alfred Empire.
This means if I want to carry a dozen swords, I don't need to carry them in a bag or satchel, I can merely trap their essence inside of a Magnus card and then retrieve them when necessary. This world also has something known as "Magnus" - Magnus is the essence of a thing that can be trapped inside of a card and then used as will when necessary. But the Alfred Empire, one of the five nations of the world, has turned on the wings of the heart, focusing on machinery known as Machina, and is removing wings from its own citizens. Everyone in the world of Baten Kaitos has wings, known as Wings of the Heart, and these wings can be manifested at will or during emotional moments. Baten Kaitos Origins takes place 20 years before the first game in an unnamed world where people live on floating islands above a toxic cloud sea.
